• Lūdzu nokopē/ielīmē kļūdas ziņu, ko redzi ekrānā, ja tāda ir.
I recently played Pax Ren with a new player who is red/green colorblind and has a very hard time telling the Reformist and Islamic pieces apart, especially as they're depicted on the cards. Would it be possible to have an option that overlays a religious symbol on each piece or something? It wouldn't be something I'd want to have enabled by default, as it would be a lot of extra information that most players won't need, but it might make the game playable for some people. Maybe there's a more elegant solution; I am not a UX guy. Just something to think about.

Ziņojuma vēsture
I do have the red-green colourblindness and for me was virtually impossible to distinguish the reformist and catholic pawns.
For me personally it was difficult to choose whether and where to play a religious war, since I could not count the believers and heretics. Furthermore I have not much idea what pawn would be placed during the the trade fair. In general I lack the overview over the religious state of the game.
Unfortunately, the shades of colours cause, that the windows colour filter is not helpful at all.
The pawns depicted on the cards are not that much problem for me, thanks to the tooltip text - as I can see, you have already implemented that. Such solution for cards seems sufficient to me.
Some things that comes to my mind, that could help players with colourblindness, are:
- tooltip when hovering over a pawn and/or a city stating its religion (similar to those on cards), or owning player - this would be really helpful, but that would not give the overview
- clicking on a religion icon or a player's board could highlight the pawns corresponding
- an overlaying religion/player symbol - I am aware of similar overlay in "Ticket to ride - Europa" (screenshot: ibb.co/CvQSyty) - This is not perfect, but it gives us something else to to distinguish besides the colour, as the OP suggested - overlaying a symbol of the religion would be helpfull to distinguish the pawns.
- as an alternative to the overlaying symbol I would maybe suggest slightly modified pawn design - I have something like this in mind - ibb.co/sqHZ9gZ (I have no idea if I got the colours right)
- probably the best solution though would be to allow the players to the colours, they want to have displayed and that work best for them (I would probably choose white, black and any third colour)
Such things should not be of course enabled by default, but they could be turned through the settings.
I post what comes to my mind as an amateur - I am not sure, if these suggestions are technically possible (or feasible), or if they would work well with the game and if they would be approved by the publisher.
Also, I am quite a newbie to the Pax Renaissance, so I probably cannot quite grasp every detail, this could impact.
If you'd have any question or needed any assistance, feel free to contact me.
Thank you!
I might pop in sometime, when I come across an issue connected with the colours.
I noticed a card - Inquisitor pope - has an ability affecting RED or GOLD bishop. I am not really able to determine, which is red and which is gold. It would be helpful if the tooltip would state the religion alongside the colour.
Thank you!
Displaying the chess pieces in different colors should be feasible I think assuming ION Games can provide those in black and white color, but they already did for the age of reformation promo pawns. The white there is a little greyish to. It would be great if you could confirm if this is ok: x.boardgamearena.net/data/themereleases/current/games/paxrenaissance/240507-2124/img/pawns.png
The most flexible I think would be to have a setting to enable color blind mode and then allow you to chose the colors for the chess pieces / for the players pawns from the available colors. That should work right?
That would still leave the map in the original colors thought. If I can get images for the city icons from ION Games I might be able to overlap those on the map card. Otherwise tooltips for the cities should be possible I think. And whenever you click a city to place a Levy the title bar should show the pieces in the chosen colors.
Updating the tooltips so they show religion as well as color should also be no problem.
Thank you so much for your dedication and the fantastic work you’re doing! I truly appreciate how attentive you are to player feedback and your commitment to improving the game’s accessibility for colorblind players like myself.
Regarding the player pawn colors: given the six colors provided, I could definitely pick four that would work well for me. However, I want to acknowledge that there are different types of colorblindness, so I can’t speak for everyone. That said, I did test the pieces using a colorblindness simulator, and to me, they seemed to work fine across all types. Based on what I can see, I think your approach should be effective.
Aside from the player pawns, the biggest challenge for me lies with the other pawns whose colors depend on their religion. These shades are too similar, particularly on the city icons, as you mentioned. It’s here where I struggle the most to distinguish between them. If there’s a way to differentiate these colors further or adjust them in some way, that would make a big difference.
Once again, thank you for taking these issues seriously, and for your ongoing work to make the game more accessible. I’m happy to continue playing and providing feedback if that helps!
